activate 3G internet on NTC

Nepal Telecom is offering 3G services for Smartphone users with a small activation charge. The 3G internet services is good in various parts of Kathmandu valley and its also available in major cities like Pokhera.

The one time activation charge for 3G service is Rs 100 for Pre-paid users. The GPRS tariff for 3G internet is Rs. 0.15/100 Kb which is same as the 2G (EDGE and GPRS).

So, if you have 3G capable phone I suggest that you activate 3G services because the data rate is same and you will get much better internet speed on your phone than 2G service.

You can go to Pulchowk NTC office and activate 3G on your SIM card.

Notes:
1. You don't have to get a new SIM card for 3G. Your old SIM card will work as well.
2. 3G service will become active after 24 hours of payment.

What is 3G?
3G is the third generation of wireless communication technologies. 3G technologies enables fastest data transmission speeds, greater network capacity and more advanced network services.

Nepal Telecom 3G coverage area: Kathmandu valley, Banepa, Pokhara city and Lumbani.

If you have any questions let me know on the comment section.

UPDATE: Now, you don't have to go to NTC office for 3G activation. Just type 3G and send SMS to 1400 and your SIM will be 3G enabled within 24-48 hours.

Regarding viber and other software, the 3G service is not good enough to use skype or viber in my opinion. Its faster for normal mobile browsing but not fast enough for software like Skype and Viber.

    1. Hi, 3G services of Nepal Telecom works only on few major cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara. The best option for EBC trek will be to buy 3G SIM from Ncell. It works great around Everest region. So, go to Ncell center at thamel and buy a SIM card and load it up with required calling hours and data charges. You need passport and a passport photo to purchase the SIM.
